hosted by Golden’s Bridge Hunt
at Baxter Road, North Salem

After the very successful local Old Chatham Hunt puppy show on a stunningly gorgeous spring day, our foxhound puppies, brood bitches, and stallion hounds headed south to the Golden’s Bridge Hunt territory for the 2016 New York District Puppy Show on May 1st. Exhibiting along with Old Chatham and Golden’s Bridge, were Millbrook, Windy Hollow and Rombout hunts. Unlike Saturday’s bucolic weather, torrential rain met us; the venue was changed to a riding pavilion on Baxter Road, where our hounds had dry housing in a box stall. Here Craven and Bart served as hound ambassadors to those new to foxhunting, greeting passersby with happy grins as they stood up and looked over the stall door. MFH Tommy Hopkins, kennel-person Stephanie Lee, Whipper-ins, Gail and Lisa, Doe Hee Kim and junior handlers, Diba, Jaidev, and Izabel were on hand for trotting out and standing up the hounds.

First to go were our 2015 puppies, well-practiced by our juniors in the weeks beforehand they showed confidently. Our bitch puppy, Hilltop, placed well in a very competitive group and little Hazel, third, showing her correct and floating trot in the second year group.

Next up were the junior handlers. Our Old Chatham juniors placed at the top of each group! Jaidev, first for the under 11 years, and Diba, in a very crowded group of young competitors, placed first in the 11 to 18 years. Kudus for our Old Chatham juniors!

After a nice, hot lunch put on by Golden’s Bridge the older hounds showed. Old Chatham made a spectacular showing in the very important Brood Bitch (the foundation of a pack) class as Hurricane won and Ivory placed third. In the Get class, again, Hurricane and her daughters, Hilltop and Hooper, placed third with many combinations showing.

All in all it was a successful day, a chance to see like-minded people all celebrating wonderful animals. We drove back north through the rain, home in time for a hot shower and supper.

A big thank you to Gail Day for this report!
